Photographer's stamp on verso. John Howard Paine was born in Cleveland, OH on September 9, 1888. He moved to Washington, D.C. where he began to take photographs and became active in the photo salons of the 1920s and 1930s, including those of the Camera Club of New York and the Toronto Camera Club. He also entered the All American Photographic Salon (Los Angeles), which was curated by the pictorialist Louis Fleckenstein. He is mentioned in the 1930 American Art Annual, published by the American Federation of Arts. He is also in the George Eastman House database.
