Lythgoe was director of the food and drug division of the Massachusetts State Department of Public Health. He took photographs as a serious hobby and entered many of the salons of the 1920s-30s. His work is in the collection of the Photographic Society of America. Lythgoe also used photography in his public health position and apparently made photomicrographs. He wrote a number of articles on public health and these were often illustrated with photographs.He lived in Newton, MA.
