About This Image

Unsigned but annotated '17’ in pencil in unknown hand, possibly Frank’s, on print verso with stamped number (2 895). This was most likely one of the Guggenheim proof prints used for the "Americans" book, according to Robert Frank expert Stuart Alexander, who confirms that it is a vintage work print with "better tonality than other similar (meaning machine produced work prints) prints (of other such Frank images) in the National Gallery." It also doesn't glow under black light, further indicating an early print. All the other Frank “Covered Car” images that I’ve seen glow brightly under blacklight, and are from the late 1970s or 1980s, or later.See: Robert Frank, The Americans; Alex Novak, For the Love of the Image: A Selection of 110 Photographs, p.91, pl.93.Provenance: Robert Frank to a photographer at Chicago School of Design in the 1960s; Stephen Daiter Gallery.
