Irie's wetstamp on verso, along with the location inscribed in unknown hand.
Nara is an ancient city in Japan and the Toshodaiji Temple is the head temple of the Ritsu sect of Buddhism. This sect was founded in 759 by the Chinese priest Ganjin, and a statue in his likeness is housed in the Miedo (or Mie Hall), but only exhibited from June 5-7 to celebrate his memorial day. The Miedo was reconstructed in the Shinden style in 1964 and moved to Toshodaiji Temple where it now stands. This photo is presumed to have been taken just after the reconstruction.
