About This Image

One of a handful of houses that survived the Great Fire of London in 1666. LIFE Picture Collection stamp on verso. Evelyn Hofer (1922-2009) was a German-American documentary, architectural and portrait photographer whose family fled Nazi Germany in 1933. She moved to New York City in 1946. Hilton Kramer praised her powers of "pure observation" and her dedication to form and wrote in a review of an exhibition at the Witkin Gallery in 1977, "She has an extraordinary eye for subtle differences in the quality of light and in the details of texture and shape...." and "She is, in my opinion, one of the living masters of her medium." In 1994 the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland held a retrospective of her work, "The Universal Eye."
