About This Image

The photographer's signature and the location "Paris" in pencil on recto in margins. Size refers to the image area only of the postcard.Eva Révai was the daughter of a well-known Jewish Hungarian woman photographer, Ilka Revai. They probably arrived in Paris around 1923-24, although one source indicates it was later around 1927.Eva had apparently been André Kertész's lover for a short time, perhaps a year. Nobody knew about their affair because Kertész was then later married to his wife Elisabeth, but Eva had told acquaintances in Paris about the affair. She and her mother were also involved later with the Hungarian poet József Attila. Her photographer-mother seemed to attract the attention of poets, because her photograph of Lajos Kassák, another Hungarian poet of note, in 1917 is considered one of the first modernist portraits.Between the wars Eva Revai worked for Paul Poiret as a designer and maker of belt-buckles, buttons and mostly paper and textile flowers to adorn his models and different objects for decoration.Kertész even made photographs of some of her work. After the war she continued to work for several fashion houses.Eva Révai posed for a number of Hungarian photographers besides Kertész, including Ergy Landau, who photographed her in the nude.Eva Revai later retired and became a lonely old lady, who didn't stop thinking about her mother, who disappeared in Hungary in 1944-45 without a trace. She was a 103 years old when she passed away in Paris in 2004. She appears in several other photographs by Kertész including the group portrait on the cover of the Manchester Collection (third from the right) and on page 27, figure 14, of "André Kertész Of Paris and New York".Provenance: photographer to Eva Révai. Image is included in the Chicago Institute of Art's André Kertész Postcards from Paris, catalogue raisonné, p. 222, cat.156. This is the only known print of this image.
